The work begins and ends with the sound of water. The text is drawn largely from the Gospel of St. Matthew with brief poetic reflections by the composer. Tan Dun creates a "water-instruments orchestra" and explores a remarkably wide range of vocal styles, from the overtone singing of Mongolia to the unique colors of Peking Opera.
