Fellowship Artists
The Jasper String Quartet is currently the graduate quartet-in-residence at the Yale School of Music and winners of the Plowman, Coleman and Fischoff Chamber Music Competitions. Formed at the Oberlin Conservatory in 2003, the Quartet recently graduated from Rice University‘s quartet program. The quartet has performed across the United States and in Canada, Norway and Italy. They are dedicated to presenting contemporary music and standard repertoire to a broad audience.
J Freivogel, violin
Violinist J Freivogel holds degrees from Rice University, Oberlin College and the Oberlin Conservatory. Mr. Freivogel was the winner of the concerto competition at Oberlin, performing Bela Bartók‘s Violin Concerto No. 2 with the Oberlin Orchestra. He is the founding first violinist of the Jasper String Quartet.
Sae Niwa, violin
Sae Niwa, violin, was born in Japan and began playing violin at age three. In 2001, Ms. Niwa came to the United States to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Donald Weilerstein. She continued her studies with Mr. Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory, where she received undergraduate and graduate diplomas. Ms. Niwa won third prize in the 2006 Swedish Duo International Competition with pianist So Oyama.
Sam Quintal, viola
Sam Quintal was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, beginning the violin at age six and viola at age eleven. Mr. Quintal has performed extensively in North America, from Zankel Hall and Merkin Hall in New York, to the Banff Center in Canada. Mr. Quintal earned his Bachelor of Music in violin performance at the Oberlin Conservatory and his Master of Music from Rice University, studying with James Dunham.
Rachel Henderson, cello
Rachel Henderson, cello, has been a soloist with the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra and Apollo‘s Fire, Cleveland‘s Baroque Orchestra. While studying at the Oberlin Conservatory, she earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Cello Performance and a Master of Music Degree in Baroque Cello and Viola da Gamba. Her principal teachers have been Norman Fischer, Clive Greensmith and Catharina Meints. |
