LA JOLLA MUSIC SOCIETY PRESENTS
PIANIST ANNE-MARIE MCDERMOTT

SAN DIEGO, CA —La Jolla Music Society opens this season’s Frieman Family Piano Series and continues the Chopin Bicentennial Celebration
with pianist Anne-Marie McDermott performing at MCASD Sherwood
Auditorium on Friday, October 22 at 8 pm. A consummate artist who
balances a versatile career as a soloist and collaborator, Anne-Marie
McDermott performs over 100 concerts a year in a combination of solo
recitals, concerti and chamber music. Her repertoire choices are
eclectic, spanning from Bach and Haydn to Prokofiev and Scriabin to
Kernis, Hartke, Tower and Wuorinen. Her all-Chopin program includes: Three Waltzes, Op. 34, Impromptu No. 1 in A-flat Minor, Ballade No. 1 in G Minor and Scherzo No. 1 in B Minor on La Jolla Music Society’s “The Belanich Steinway.”
La Jolla Music Society enhances the concert-going experience by
presenting “Preludes” – pre-concert chats and performances – prior to
each performance, free to ticket-holders. Benjamin K. Roe, general
manager of WDAV-FM Classical Public Radio in Davidson, NC, returns with
his year-long lecture series on composer Frédéric Chopinat 7 pm.

About the artist – ANNE-MARIE MCDERMOTT, piano
With over 50 concerti in her repertoire, Anne-Marie McDermott has
performed with many leading orchestra including the New York
Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, National Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber
Orchestra and the San Diego Symphony. Her recital engagements have
included the 92nd Street Y, Alice Tully Hall, Town Hall, The Schubert
Club, Kennedy Center, as well as universities across the country. Ms.
McDermott has curated and performed in a number of intense projects
including: the Complete Prokofiev Piano Sonatas and Chamber Music, a
Three Concert Series of Shostakovich Chamber Music, as well as a recital
series of Haydn and Beethoven Piano Sonatas. Most recently, she
commissioned works of Charles Wuorinen and Clarice Assad which were
premiered in May 2009 at Town Hall, in conjunction with Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
In addition to her many achievements, Ms. McDermott is the Artistic
Director of two new Festivals; The Ocean Reef Chamber Music Festival and
The Avila Chamber Music Celebration in Curacao and has recently been
named the Artistic Director of the famed Vail Valley Music Festival in
Colorado, which hosts the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia
Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony in addition to presenting over 40
chamber music concerts throughout the summer.
About San Diego’s Chopin Bicentennial Celebration
La Jolla Music Society is a lead-collaborator for San Diego’s Chopin Bicentennial Celebration, a unique celebration which honors the 200th
anniversary of legendary composer Frédéric Chopin's birth. LJMS joins
with the San Diego Symphony, the San Diego Youth Symphony &
Conservatory and the California Ballet in a year-long festival covering
the entire catalog of Chopin's work published during the composer's
lifetime. Comprising approximately 266 works over 12 concerts in five
venues during 2010, the Chopin Bicentennial Celebration will
include two programs as part of the La Jolla Music Society's SummerFest,
four programs on the Society's Frieman Family Piano Series and two
recitals on the Discovery Series. Two programs on the San Diego Symphony
Jacobs' Masterworks series and single programs by the California Ballet
and the San Diego Youth Symphony completes the Celebration.
