La Jolla Music Society’s partnership with the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory supports young musicians in several ways. The SDYS artistic director recommends several high level students to perform on Discovery Series Preludes each year, giving them the beneficial stage experience. Many of those students also receive master classes with La Jolla Music Society artists. The partnership also supports graduates from our own Community Music Center through scholarships to SDYS programs.
La Jolla Music Society is proud to be the community partner with San Diego State University’s School of Music and Dance in support of the String Quartet in Residence program. Student string quartets from around the country audition for the two-year program during which the quartet studies and performs, ultimately obtaining the degree of Artist Diploma. The participating artists are jointly selected by faculty of San Diego State University with the President &Artistic Director of La Jolla Music Society. The quartets perform regularly in the San Diego area and offer outreach appearances in schools at community events on behalf of La Jolla Music Society. The young musicians are also given development opportunities through master classes with top-tier artists as well as professional advice from the President and Artistic Director.
La Jolla Music Society’s education programs support the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards specified by the California State Board of Education. Regular communication with VAPA administrators ensures that the resources of our Education and Community Engagement programs are used efficiently on district campuses.
Elizabeth Freese Elementary School, in the Skyline neighborhood of San Diego, has been an active partner with La Jolla Music Society for more than 10 years. Students from this Arts and Culture Magnet program regularly attend Celebrity Series concerts, and Discovery Series artists-in-residence visit the campus each year to interact with students.
