"Bringing Music to the Community"
La Jolla Music Society has a long standing history of bringing artists to the community to perform outreach programs. Artists in the Discovery and North County Series engage in residencies of several days, visiting area schools and libraries, as well as community and business centers. The program introduces thousands of San Diego children to classical music each year and garners attention for La Jolla Music Society’s concerts and other endeavors.
Classroom Outreach
Since the inception of the Discovery Series in 1993, visiting artists have performed residency activities in La Jolla and in greater San Diego County. The majority of these services are performed for area school children in collaboration with the districts’ Visual and Performing Arts departments. On an elementary school campus, the artists may perform an assembly that offers young children their first exposure to live classical music. At the middle and high school level, the Production and Education Manager works with the teachers to develop specific events that support current curriculum in music and social studies.
Community Engagement
La Jolla Music Society recognizes that there are many area residents who are interested in our programming but are unable to attend concerts in La Jolla and downtown San Diego. The outreach tradition has extended beyond the classroom to include performance demonstrations and concerts at public libraries and civic facilities such as Children’s Hospital, the San Diego Art Institute, Malcolm X Library and the Jewish Community Center. Series and SummerFest performers have performed for military enlisted and officers at Coronado, Miramar and Camp Pendleton.
